DENTAL CARIES / TOOTH DECAY

Dental caries is the breakdown of tooth surface caused by various bacteria in the mouth. They produce acid that destroys the tooth’s layers. Bacteria turns sugars and carbohydrates in food we eat to acid. The acid dissolves the minerals in the top layer of teeth (enamel) causing tiny pits (caries/cavity) on the surface which becomes deeper and bigger if left untreated.

SYMPTOMS

Symptoms of caries can vary from sensitivity while having anything hot or cold to severe pain and swelling depending on the severity of caries. Common symptoms are

Cavity is formed in the grooves in the back teeth involving only the 1st layer(Enamel) of the tooth.
